Features:
- Microscope micrometers are commonly used for measuring or counting specimens
- Eyepiece micrometers (also referred to as 'reticles') are small glass discs with markings on them
- Measurement of microscopic objects requires use of eyepiece micrometer (reticle) and stage micrometer
- Eyepiece micrometer is round glass disk on which scale has been etched and is inserted into one eyepiece and held in place in correct focal plane of eyepiece with small retaining ring
- Eyepiece and eyepiece micrometer can be rotated 360 degrees in the eyetube so measuring scale can be aligned with or superimposed over image of specimen
- Typical eyepiece micrometer would be 5 mm or 10 mm linear scale featuring 50 or 100 divisions
- Before using eyepiece micrometer, it is necessary to calibrate eyepiece micrometer using stage micrometer
- Stage micrometer is simply microscope slide with known dimension etched upon its surface
- Stage micrometer is placed directly on stage of microscope and brought into focus
- By rotating eyepiece both scales can be positioned parallel to each other
- To calibrate eyepiece micrometer, user must first find out how many intervals of the eyepiece micrometer correspond to certain distance on stage micrometer — then calculate value of one interval of eyepiece micrometer
- Each microscope objective must be calibrated independently
