One of the most popular pH meters on the market, the portable micorprocessor-based HI 8424 is able to perform pH, ORP and temperature measurements with a high degree of accuracy and fast response.  It features an enhanced user interface, rainproof casing, battery percentage indication, low battery detection, automatic shut-off, automatic calibration, and error codes to guide the user in calibration and troubleshooting.The instrument has automatic calibration at one- or two-points with three memorized buffer values (pH 4.01, pH 7.01, and pH 10.01).  Once the instrument has been calibrated, the buffer values used during calibration are displayed with tags on the LCD.  This feature keeps users informed of the current calibration and helps to avoid taking measurements that are out of range.The user can set the following parameters by entering the setup mode through the keyboard:

• enabling or disabling the auto-off feature
• enabling or disabling the acoutic signal
• selecting the temperature unit, °C or °F

The pH probe can be exchanged for an ORP probe (purchase separately) to obtain ORP readings in the mV range.  The instrument resolution automatically switches from 0.1 mV to 1 mV when readings exceed ±699.9 mV.The instrument is supplied with an HI 1230B double reference junction, Ag/AgCl gel-filled, PEI combination pH electrode which is recommended for field applications.  It has a 1 m cable and a BNC connector.  A stainless steel temperature with an RCA socket and 1 m cable is also supplied.The meter is powered with a 9V alkaline
