- Prevents super-heating and dangerous explosive vaporization known as bumping
- Add few in any boiling liquid to permit steady copious stream of bubbles to escape without spamodic splatter
- Insoluble—cannot contaminate liquid
- Reduces flask breakage
- Remains in bottom of flask or beaker, permitting liquid to be readily decanted
- Discard granules after use
- Especially useful in boiling soap solutions and evaporating ethereal extracts of fat
- Any gases formed during boiling are quickly extracted completely
